La Sportiva Hyper Mid

These lightweight, waterproof, mid-cut, boots are perfect for lengthy day walks or scrambling walks.
They are also a good option for simpler through walks, with light to moderate weight packs.
Features:
  • Flexible, making them comfortable for steep, or scrambling walks such as Mt Barney.
  • Stable, waterproof, and supportive and cushioned enough for through walks on maintained walks such as the Overland, Three Capes, Milford, Kepler, Routeburn, and similar.
  • Light enough (they are 210g a pair lighter than the Scarpa Terra in size 42) to be comfortable and not feel like overkill on day walks and more simple hikes up Mt Coot-Tha, Glass-House Mountains, or in Lamington NP.
  • Different shape to the TX4 but still offering a nice, grippy outsole.
  • Mid-cut effectively improves the waterproofing, particularly compared to Low-cuts such as Salomon XA Pro GTX, and means they are easier to use with gaiters.
My Feedback:
I have had a set of these for a couple of months now, and really enjoy them. I got these to replace my previous pair of Scarpa Tech Ascents which I had for a few years previously. This style of boot has always been my go-to for most of my walking. I wore my Tech Ascents on the Kepler Track, the Overland Track, Thorsborne Trail (Hinchinbrook Island GW), Conondale GW, Carnarvon George GW, and countless overnight, and day walks. So far I prefer the Hyper Mid.
They are a broader fit than the Scarpa, and can be made to feel even broader due to how far down the toe box the lacing extends, which suits my feet a little better (I relied on the lacing down to the toe to get the Scarpas to fit). The rubber is also nice and grippy, and compares favourably to many of the approach shoes I have had. While probably not quite as sticky as the Vibram “Mega-Grip” on the TX4 or the “Stealth” compounds used by 5.10, I had complete confidence in the grip wearing these up Logans ridge, and throughout Girraween and Lamington National Parks, even on wet rock.
